With the mild winter in Georgia this year, FC Georgia United players have been practicing at least two—and often three—times per week preparing for the June 2012 USASA Veterans Cup Championships in San Diego.
United will be taking part in both the over-60 and over-65, looking to continue its recent dominance.
"Having won the over-65 Division two years in a row, we know the usual suspects will be gunning to deny us a three-peat," FC Georgia United player Dietmar Doehring said. "We are returning with the nucleus of the 2011 team, including three over-70 stalwarts, and have added several “youngsters” who turn 65 this year, so we like our chances, but know we will face stiff competition.”
Capitalizing on their past successes, United have added several sponsors in recent months, and have plans to travel to Japan in October to compete against several teams in and around the Tokyo area.
"We feel privileged to be playing the “’beautiful game”’ at our age and look forward seeing and playing against our old friends at this special tournament," Doehring said.
The 2012 Veterans Cup kicks off June 26 and runs through July 1. In addition to the over-60 and over-65 divisions there are 10 other divisions including both men’s and women’s over-30, over-40 and over-50.
