PSA Elite and Cal FC advance to US Open Cup
With the conclusion of the Region IV tournament this pastweekend, the Lamar Hunt Open Cup bracket is set. Two Southern California teams, Cal FC and PSA Elite, finished group play undefeated and joined the rest of the Open Cup field.
Cal FC, managed by former US National team all-time leading scorer Eric Wynalda, took out last year’s qualifier, Doxa Italia, 4-3 after taking a 4-0 lead. They finished group play with a +11 goal differential.
PSA Elite knocked out Region IV’s other qualifier, DV8 Defenders 3-0 and went on to complete a weekend clean sheet. They defeated Pittsburg Galaxy 6-0, tied OC Crew 0-0 and then defeated Cal FC in the championship game 2-0.
Both teams will head north for first round play. PSA Elite will take on Portland Timbers U23s at Jeld-Wen Field, and Cal FC will battle Kitsap Pumas in Bremerton, Washington.
